Dr. John Swartzberg at the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter says it is healthful and hydrating.
"It does replenish a lot of electrolytes and it does have a lot of potassium in it and we know that people don't get enough potassium. So it is an alternative for getting electrolytes and especially potassium. On the other hand, it's an expensive alternative."
But Dr. Swartzberg says just don't believe all the hyped-up medical claims made for coconut water: that it can control diabetes, fight viruses, speed up your metabolism, treat kidney stones, stop dandruff or prevent cancer.
The bottom line: "I think if you enjoy coconut water and you don't mind spending the extra money for it and you're not under the illusion that it's doing something incredibly healthy for you, go ahead."
After all, it's clearly better than drinking some sugary drink.
