Additional staff hired at the Nez Perce county jail

LEWISTON, ID - The Nez Perce county sheriff's department is adding three new employees to their jail staff, a move that Chief Deputy Scot Gleason said was extremely necessary.

They're currently training the three new staff members and two replacement employees to relieve the overtime hours of their current staff. Gleason said after an incident in November, where an inmate hanged himself, they re-examined their safety protocols, which included adding more staff members.

"It's not only the safety of our employees, which comes first, but the safety of the inmates which is also very important to us," said Gleason.

Gleason said that adding three new members to their staff is going to cost approximately $150,000 a year.
