Alleged rape by acquaintance on U of I campus goes to jury

MOSCOW, ID - The trial for the man accused of raping a woman on the University of Idaho campus in October concluded Thursday afternoon with closing statements from the council.

Jesse Vierstra, 21, is accused of sexually assaulting an acquaintance behind the Sigma Chi fraternity house. The state says that the victim was a virgin who didn't show any interest in the defendant, and that she asked him to stop. The state also says the victim only had one drink that night.

In Vierstra's testimony, he claimed that the two of them started kissing, and he took her to a dark area behind the fraternity so they could have more privacy. His attorney said the "physical passion" led to consensual sex.

The jury began deliberating around 3:00 Thursday afternoon, and will continue Friday morning.
