Swimmers from around the valley are trying to break the record for the World's Largest Swimming Lesson. Reporter Carol Zinke talked to leaders from the Asotin County Aquatic Center and has the story.
Hundreds of aquatic centers, pools and water parks around the globe are a part of this event. It's an attempt to set a fifth Guinness World Record of the world's largest, simultaneous swimming lesson.
The Asotin County Family Aquatic Center is taking part in the event and they're inviting everyone to come out and enjoy a free 30-minute swimming lesson.
The record started in 2010 and it's been broken every year since. Last year over 32,000 people from 13 countries participated. This year, 32-countries are hosting the event, with a goal of breaking last year's record.
"Anyone who wants to come can sign up in advance, over the phone," said Asotin County Family Aquatic Center Program Superintendent, Maryssa Spencer. "It's the same way they'd normally register for swimming lessons. Or, you can come on the day of the event, but we recommend that you come early."
In order to be counted and have your name appear in the Guinness Book of World Records, if it's broken, you must sign in and register on the official documents before the lesson begins. Spencer said they'll start the lesson at eight o'clock on the dot.
She said the goal of this event is not only to break a world record, but more importantly, to build water awareness in our community.
"Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children ages one through 14," said Spencer. "So, we're doing everything we can to help prevent that by promoting the importance of learning how to swim, wearing life jackets and generally staying aware of water safety in order to make this is a safe summer."
One lucky person could win a free swim lesson session. Leaders from the aquatic center will announce a winner at the end of the swimming lesson.
Spencer said they expect to know the results of their attempt by the end of next week. The record-breaking attempt begins at eight Friday morning but don't forget you need to show up a little earlier to sign up.
