Asotin County Clerk's Office retains clerk position

ASOTIN, WA - The Asotin County Clerk's Office won't see a staffing cut that would've forced the office to close down two days a week.

The Asotin County Commission approved a $4,800 budget request Monday morning after weeks of deliberation and discussion with clerk Marie Eggert. The Washington State Operating Budget, which narrowly passed at the beginning of this month, cut the funding for a position within the office. After figuring out where the funding would come from to pay for the position, Eggert received approval to keep the position on the payroll.

"It'll be on your shoulders, to make sure that all the guidelines of a contractor is fulfilled," said Asotin County Commissioner Jim Fuller.

The money for the employee's salary comes from the current expense fund. However, the commission was quick to warn Eggert that other sources of funding need to be sorted out for the next budget cycle if she wants to maintain the position in the future.
