Once medics arrived and assessed McGee, they determined an air ambulance wasn't necessary and told the LifeFlight helicopter to turn around. However, the medics on scene changed their minds after a second assessment of McGee.
"They decided that they would rather have the helicopter respond back and transport back due to the distance and the rough road getting the patient out of here," said Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Lucas Martin.
McGee was air lifted to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. According to medics, McGee injured his back and may have sustained a head injury. The sheriff's office said there are usually about four ATV crashes each year in the area.
