Be aware of a phone scam; the caller claims to be with the sheriff's office

ASOTIN, WA - The Asotin County Sheriff's Office is getting reports about a phone scam.

Someone who's claiming they're with the sheriff's office is calling people and telling them they need to pay a certain amount of money by a certain time, or be arrested.

"That's false," said Asotin County Interim Sheriff Jim Smith. "The sheriff's department is not going to call you and tell you you'll be arrested if you don't pay money. If you get a call like this it's a scam, don't worry about it, but definitely call and report it."

Smith said if you receive a call like this, do not give the caller any personal information and report it be calling Whitcom at 509-758-2331.
