Just before 5:00 a.m., two miles outside of Colfax on Highway-195 a semi and a car collided. Public Information Officer, Jeff Sevigney said the car with four people in it slid on black ice and spun out of control. The truck driver and one of the car's passengers were treated and released, however the driver of the car 21-year-old Erica Polito-Mosso has life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers from the car 21-year-old Nancy Zepeda-Zarate and 21-year-old Ashley Gonzalez died at the scene. They were both students at Eastern Washington University.
"The rear of the vehicle actually came in contact with the front of the semi, so the car had spun completely around and was struck in the rear," said WSP, Information Officer Jeff Sevigney. "And then after being struck, slid into a ditch."
Investigators said it does not appear the speed of the car nor drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident, however the crash is still under investigation. They said severe black ice seems to be the main cause of the crash.
