President Nellis recently accepted the offer to become president of Texas Tech University. Burnett, who has been dean of the College of Law since 2002 will be taking over as the interim president on June first.
"I'm proud of the student centeredness of this institution, and what it means," said Nellis. "And I believe that focus will continue strongly with Don Burnett."
"I will endeavor the strengths in our frameworks, of excellence, and advocate for the special character, and the special mission, of this university," said Burnett.
Burnett was selected by the State Board of Education, and the interim title means that he can't be a candidate for the permanent position. The Board of Regents is in the process of assembling a committee that will select the next U of I president.
