Commissioners increase bed rates at Juvenile Detention Center

LEWISTON, ID - A $20 increase for the the daily services of a local detention center will begin October 1st.

Nez Perce County Commissioners along with the juvenile detention advisory board comprised of representatives from Idaho, Latah, Lewis, Clearwater and Nez Perce Counties as well as the Lewiston School Board agreed that the hike was necessary in order to account for overhead and maintenance operations to keep the Region Two Juvenile Detention Center open.

"It is a benefit to have it close, to have your kids close, and we do offer a good service and that's why we've tried to work with keeping this facility open," said Nez Perce County Commissioner Doug Havens.

The board felt a deficit of $100,000 is workable and can be accomplished with the increased bed rate from $170 a night to $190 a night along with a proposed deficit reduction plan of 35% that will be funded by the counties that are part of the Board.

Nez Perce County has also made the decision to implement staffing cuts of five people effective January 1st of next year as a way to reduce the deficit. Through attrition and employees getting work outside the County, three positions have already been vacated.
