Crash sends boat sailing across Oregon highway
NEWPORT, Ore. - A 26-foot boat sailed across Highway 101 on Saturday when the trailer it was on broke apart, police said.
The crash happened as a Ford SUV towed the trailer and boat north along Highway 101. The trailer started swaying side to side before it broke apart, causing the SUV to spin in a circle.
The boat came free of the trailer and slid across the southbound lanes of Highway 101, coming to rest blocking the entrance of the Agate Beach Best Western Motel.
Newport Police said the crash was caused by the age and condition of the trailer, which was carrying a load beyond its rated carrying capacity.
The 1:30 p.m. crash partially blocked Hwy 101 for 2 1/2 hours, police said. a crew from Rowley's Towing responded to the scene and removed the boat. Crews closed the Yaquina Bay Bridge for a few minutes while the truck and boat crossed the bay to Rowley's shop.
