Daniel Lazcano enters plea on First Degree Murder charges

COLFAX, WA - One of the brothers accused of killing a Rosalia man pleaded not guilty in Whitman County Superior Court Thursday.

Daniel Lazcano, 20, entered the plea during his arraignment on First Degree Murder charges for the shooting death of 23-year-old Marcus Schur.

The Whitman County Sheriff's Office said Daniel and his 24-year-old brother Frank of Pine City murdered Schur outside a Malden home on December 27th. Deputies said the brothers killed Schur in retaliation after Schur allegedly burglarized their home.

Schur's body was allegedly dumped in Bonnie Lake and was discovered in a creek just south of the lake last month.

Frank Lazcano is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. Daniel Lazcano's trial is scheduled to start June 4th.

A relative of the Lazcano brothers was arrested on Monday for allegedly trying to help cover up the crime.

Whitman County Sheriff's deputies arrested 35-year-old Travis Carlon of Pine City on a first degree felony charge of rendering criminal assistance.

Seargent Chris Chapman said Carlon talked with Frank and Daniel Lazcano shortly after they allegedly shot and killed Schur.

Authorities said Carlon is cooperating with detectives after initially denying he knew anything about the alleged murder.

Carlon was arrested and released the next day. He'll make his first court appearance Friday at 10 a.m. where he'll enter his plea.
