Driver in accident that killed Lewiston teen sentenced to 3 years

ASOTIN, WA - A 20-year-old Clarkston man pleaded guilty Thursday evening to charges associated with a roll-over accident that claimed the life of 16-year-old Ashley Nelson.

Hells Canyon Superior Court Judge William Acey sentenced Gilberto Alex Garcia to 26 months for one count of vehicular homicide and 12 months for one count of vehicular assault.

Gilberto was speeding while intoxicated near Clarkston Heights in July when his vehicle rolled over, killing Nelson. Judge Acey told Garcia that the maximum jail time he's receiving for the charges, may not bring the closure that community members need in regards to Nelson's death.

"It doesn't matter if I give you 26 or 34," said Acey. "I'm going to catch heck for it because in the eyes of this community it's going to be a grossly inadequate sentence."

Friends and family of Nelson spoke to the court before the final sentence was made.
