The generous gift came from Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer, and according to local historian Steven Branting, it's the largest private donation that the City of Lewiston has ever received. The Schweitzer's said they decided to make the donation because they were impressed with the organization and hard work that had already gone into the project.
"We've always liked to support education, and technology, and community, and we thought that all those three things came together very well in the project," said donor Beatriz Schweitzer.
"We thought it was a great opportunity to join into a project that was already so very well supported by the community," said donor Ed Schweitzer.
The money will be used to transform the second level of the 120-year-old building, and to purchase state of the art technology. The renovated library will open in April.
