Ferdinand's Ice Cream signature flavor 'Apple Cup Crisp' crowned champion

PULLMAN, WA - July is National Ice Cream Month and what better way to celebrate than to enjoy an ice cold cone in the summer sun?

Better yet, how about a cone filled with a flavor that won a nationwide flavor contest?

WSU's 'Apple Cup Crisp' ice cream was crowned champion in the Progressive Dairyman magazine's 2014 Flavor Faceoff, beating out 12 other universities.

The base is vanilla ice cream, then it's stuffed with green and spiced apple flavorings, oatmeal cookie chunks, and swirled with caramel.
The ice cream is made in-house starting off as milk from the WSU's dairy cows and then processed by food science students in the creamery.

"Pasteurize it, homogenize it the day before and then we make ice cream," said Ferdinand's Supervisor Eric Needham. "The milk is so fresh that is why we think our ice cream is so creamy and good."

The ice cream is sold at Ferdinand's Ice Cream Shoppe on WSU's campus along with last year's winner of the same title. huckleberry ripple.

Ferdinand's is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
