It turns out, one of their signature flavors is up for a national award. Ferdinand's Ice Cream Shoppe makes an "Apple Cup Crisp" flavor that's vanilla ice cream with spiced apple flavorings, pieces of oatmeal cookie, and a caramel swirl. It's in the running to win the 2014 Flavor Faceoff, an annual competition organized by Progressive Dairyman magazine.
"Apple Cup Crisp is one of our more popular flavors," said WSU Student Matt Turley. "It's popular because it's named after our rivalry with us and University of Washington."
"We always feel proud and happy when our ice cream is nominated, but mostly we just make it to make really good ice cream," said WSU Creamery Buyer/Planner Nial Yager. "That's what we're after."
This isn't the first time that Ferdinand's has been recognized by this national publication, their huckleberry ice cream won the award in 2012. This year, twelve university creameries are competing for the top title, and the winner will be announced on June 26th.
