Goodbye party held for Lewiston Fire Chief leaving for Colorado

LEWISTON, ID - It's a sad but celebratory day as the Lewiston fire chief said his last goodbyes before heading out on a new journey.

Friends, family, politicians, and of course the men and women of the Lewiston Fire Department gathered at the Lewiston Community Center for a going away party.

After serving the City of Lewiston for more than two years, Chief Garry DeJong is going back to Colorado because of health reasons, and to be with family. City Manager Jim Bennett said DeJong was exactly the type of leader the city always knew he could be.

"He didn't shrink from the hard decisions or from trying to improve the department or trying to make changes where they needed to be made," said Bennett. "You know that's what you'd expect when you hire someone to run such a fine department and wonderful organization like the City of Lewiston."

Division Chief Travis Myklebust started filling in today as Interim Fire Chief.
