Gritman Medical Center tips for eating nutritious meals on a budget

We know it can be tough to eat right when you're on a budget, but local dietitians said it can be done. Reporter Rachel Dubrovin gives us some tips on what to look for in the grocery store.

If you're trying to save money at the grocery store, it often comes down to fresh, frozen, or canned foods.

"Fresh is often a good choice, just because you know there's not going to be added things like sugar or sodium in it," said Gritman Medical Center Clinical Dietitian Mary Skoglund. "However, for a lot of people fresh doesn't work in your budget. So if you can't buy fresh, definitely frozen or canned can be a good option."

Mary Skoglund is one of Gritman Medical Center's registered dietitian nutritionists. She said you can find healthy foods for cheap if you know how to read the labels.

"Serving size is always the first thing you want to look at, it shows you what the nutrition facts are based on," said Skoglund.

When looking at canned or frozen produce, Skoglund said the fewer ingredients the better.

"You do want to watch out for any added butters, creams, sauces, sugars," said Skoglund. "Try to buy plain fruits or vegetables."

Stay away from "partially hydrogenated oils" because it's code for trans fats, which can raise your bad cholesterol levels.

"It is one we do want to avoid in all of our food if possible," said Skoglund.

And finally go ahead and fill up on high-fiber foods.

"Fiber is a really great nutrient," said Skoglund. "It's one that can help with preventing constipation, it can help with your cholesterol and your triglycerides. The general recommendation is to get about 20-35 grams per day."
