Hattie Kauffman reads from her memoir "Falling into Place"

SPALDING, ID - A former CBS News correspondent, who was the first Native American woman to ever report on national television, spoke near Lapwai Friday.

Hattie Kauffman read her newly released memoir, "Falling into Place" at the Spalding Visitor Center. Kauffman is a four-time Emmy Award Winning Correspondent. The Nez Perce Tribal member spoke about the adversities she faced as a child and how it shaped her career. Kauffman was one of seven children, who often went hungry during the time they lived in the projects in Seattle.

"Those old pains that I used to have are gone," said Kauffman. "And I won't tell you how that happened because I think you need to read the book.
