The open burning is legal for residents in the city of Asotin and parts of Asotin County outside of the Clarkston city limits. But Hardin emphasizes the limitations, pointing out that you need to be 50 feet away from a building, and burn piles must be no larger than four square feet.
"I think what people need to keep in mind is that it is limited burning and so there is actually only a few things that you can burn and you have to be safe about it too," said Hardin. "Just some minor yard waste, twigs and things like that."
The Asotin County Regional Landfill offers free yard waste disposal for a clean alternative to burning. Hardin also warns that if you've got a burning barrel, get rid of it, because they're outlawed in the state of Washington.
