Local law enforcement is cracking down on illegal fireworks

LEWISTON, ID - With the Fourth of July Holiday upon us, many people have already began lighting off their fireworks.

This year the Lewiston police and fire departments will confiscate all fireworks, except common ones that stay on the ground. Lewiston Fire Department Battalion Chief Travis Myklebust said although the city has enforced new firework regulations, there has been little to no confiscation thus far.

"The idea and the plan is to reduce the number of fires that cause significant damage to people homes and properties in the city," said Myklebust.

Extra officers will be on the lookout throughout the 4th of July holiday period and will be citing violators. Both departments encourage people to buy their fireworks from local stands to ensure that they are using ones the city has deemed safe and sound.
