Low fish count affected Steelhead Derby participation

LEWISTON, ID - The Steelhead Derby didn't bring in as many participants as the Lewis-Clark Valley of Chamber of Commerce hoped last week, even with new changes.

Despite opening up the Washington side of the Snake River, and changing the date to Thanksgiving week, Committee Member Brenda Bonfield said the low steelhead count kept potential participants out of the water. The event is the sole fundraiser for the chamber and works to bring commerce to local businesses in the area. Bonfield said their goal was to have 800 participants this year and only 300 ended up in the derby.

"It all depends on the fish count," said Bonfield. "And I would like to change the mindset of that a little bit. If you fish hard you're going to catch a fish."

However the derby did have a record number of youth participants which Bonfield credits to the date change during the holidays.
