As drivers hit the roads to celebrate the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, so will extra patrols. The Idaho Transportation Department is teaming up with local law enforcement to ensure everyone buckles up. A state grant covers overtime hours for officers out on the roadways.
"The grant allows officers time specifically working on traffic emphasis," said Lewiston Police Dept. Captain, Roger Lanier. "They don't take calls for service unless of course there's a big emergency. Officers can come in and specifically address the seat-belt compliance issues in our city."
In 2012 more than 10,000 people who died in crashes weren't wearing their seat-belts. Extra enforcement will start on Monday, and run through June first.
