The North Central Branch of the Idaho Food Bank has decided to start a school pantry in Lapwai for families that have children attending school there. Cari Miller, the North Central Branch Manager at the Idaho Food Bank, says Lapwai was chosen due to the amount of low income families and the information received by students participating in the back pack program.
"A lot of the children on the weekends are sharing the food with their older siblings or with the rest of their family," said Miller. "And so the School Pantry Program is a partner program to the Backpack Program, so we're offering food to the rest of the family."
The food bank is asking the public for their help by donating refrigerators, freezers and shelves for these new school pantries. The Idaho Food Bank hopes to continue this trend and open three additional school pantries at other locations in the near future.
