New board chairman steps in hoping to improve Asotin Health Dist. program

CLARKSTON, WA - Small steps for the recently crippled Asotin County Health District as they start the year with a new board chairman.

Asotin County Commissioner Jim Jeffords is the new Health Board Chairman for the county. Jeffords said he's already working with Washington State Secretary of Health, John Wiesman to improve the struggling program. Last year, due to budget cuts, the Asotin County Health District was forced to layoff two of their three nurses and downsize their current building space.

"He's going to be putting together a group of county commissioners and elected (officials) to look at foundational principles of public health in the state," said Jeffords.

The historic purpose of the Asotin County Health District was to provide vaccinations and treatments at low cost to locals. Now, the program is likely to act as an education center that provides public health information instead of services.
