Eight-year-old Orchards Elementary School second grade student Benicio Avila depicted a scene of birch trees on a winter night. Benicio's artwork will be featured on this year's State Department of Education's holiday greeting card, something he's very excited about for more than one reason.
"I haven't won anything like that," said Avila.
"He's a great artist," said Orchards Elementary second grade teacher Heidi Cornell. "He's very creative and it was a great opportunity to show that he could be a leader at something."
"It was unbelievable at first," said mother Army Avila. "My other son's the artist, not Benicio, I couldn't believe it. The teacher emailed it to me and I'm just really proud."
The holiday card is sent to schools, districts and others across the state.
And while Benicio was the overall winner, we'd also like to congratulate Centennial Elementary first-grader Hanna Shepard and Whitman Elementary fourth-grader Renae McGarry who were each selected as the winners of their grade levels.
