Precautionary evacuation at Clearwater Paper

It wasn't an ammonia leak after all.

Clearwater paper spokesperon Matt Van Vleet said a scheduled maintenance shutdown is underway.

During this period of time, valves are open.

Somehow, an ammonia solution and Sodium Hypochlorite mixed together and gave off a reaction that was strong enough to set off the sensor alarm.

No one was hurt, and the "all-clear" was given early this evening, in time for the 6 p.m. shift.

Van Vleet told KLEW News Wednesday morning the mill conducted a precautionary evacuation of their Pulp and Paperboard building after a sensor trip alarm went off.

It happened at 8:50 a.m.

As a precaution, all employees in that building were evacuated.

Since the equipment in that building was down for annual maintenance, there was no interruption to production.
