The first event is a safety forum that honors former U of I student Katy Benoit, who was tragically murdered in 2011 by a former professor at the university that she had previously been in a relationship with. A couple of topics that will be discussed during the Katy Benoit Safety Forum include how to talk to a friend that may have been sexually assaulted, and stalking on social media.
"We feel like it's very important to get these messages out to our students, and with our faculty during the first weeks of the semester so that they can be better prepared," said University of Idaho Dean of Students Bruce Pitman.
The university will hold various other workshops all week, and they're all built around the theme of looking out for other students. This safety week is designed to educate students about bystander intervention and high-risk behaviors by providing intervention strategies and telling them about the resources that are available to them.
