Secretary of State Ben Ysursa officially endorses Phil McGrane
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- Idaho's long-standing Secretary of State Ben Ysursa has officially endorsed Ada County's chief deputy clerk Phil McGrane to be his replacement when he retires later this year.
Ysursa has been quiet about his endorsement in the crowded candidate field over the past couple of months. But that, he says, was his intention.
He wanted to wait until the filing period closed.
"I have had numerous inquiries from the general public about who I believe is the best person to be our next Secretary of State. In my opinion that individual is Phil McGrane," Ysursa said in a news release. "His time serving the people of Ada County, especially in elections, has prepared him well for the duties of Secretary of State."
McGrane is among several opponents looking to replace Ysursa including Rep. Lawrence Denney, former Sen. Mitch Toryanski, former Sen. Even Frasure as well as Rep. Holli Woodings.
"I've looked up to Ben as a mentor and an example of what a political leader can be: honest, ethical and fair," McGrane said. "I am excited to continue the great tradition of honesty and transparency Idahoans have come to expect from our Secretary of State."
The GOP primary will be held May 20.
