Superintendent: 'Arming teachers is certainly worth considering'

GARDEN VALLEY, Idaho (KBOI) - An Idaho school district is considering having some of its teachers and staff carry or have access to weapons.

"Being in a rural area where it might take an hour for law enforcement to respond to a serious threat or incident, arming teachers and staff is certainly worth considering," said Randy Schrader, Garden Valley School District superintendent.

Schrader said there is "much to consider" and a lot more input will be needed if the district decides to move forward with the plan. Recently, the school board discussed the issue and received input from residents.

"All input was positive, but it will be a process that will include intense training and consulting before the trustees would move forward," Schrader said.

Many school districts around the country are considering similar options for teachers after the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy in Connecticut late last year.
