The Eye Doctor apologizes after sign sparks social media firestorm
LEWISTON, ID —
A Lewiston optometrist known as The Eye Doctor is now publicly apologizing after a sign he posted outside of his business sparked controversy.
A viewer sent us this picture of the sign, which was taken down days later. It reads, “Welcome to Lewiston. When it’s hot please dress for the body you have, not the body you wish you had - Thanks.”
It created a firestorm on social media. While some people found humor in the message, many others called the sign offensive, shameful and disgusting…calling the sign a blatant show of fat shaming.
After the sign was taken down, Dr. Ron Sheahan posted an apology to anyone he offended. In today’s Lewiston Tribune, his apology letter was printed on the opinion page. He wrote, “It is never his intention to hurt anyone but I did.”
We reached out to Dr. Sheahan for comment, but have not yet heard back. Today’s sign says, Yesterday’s Gone. Tomorrow Has Not Yet Come. We Have Only Today. Let Us Begin.
