U of I held opening ceremony at new Confucius Institute

MOSCOW, ID - The University of Idaho opened a Confucius Institute on campus, and it's the last one the Chinese government will fund in the United States.

There are several Confucius Institutes across the nation that are designed to further the understanding of Chinese language and culture in the U.S. Over the last couple of years, the U of I has worked with the South China University of Technology to bring one to Moscow.

"This opens an exciting chapter for us at the University of Idaho in developing an understanding and common language between the citizens of this region and the citizens of China," said University of Idaho President M. Duane Nellis.

The U of I held an opening ceremony on campus Monday that included guests from the partnering university in China. The U of I is the home of the new center, but the program is owned and funded by the South China University of Technology.
