Captain Dan Hally said the victims are getting fraudulent calls all the way to computer viruses that are hacking into their files. According to Hally the recent uptick of cases isn't surprising, given the time of year.
"We've seen a significant increase in the last two weeks and it comes with the season," said Hally. "You know I've been doing this a long time and it seems when the Christmas music starts in the department stores, the fraud and the scams increase as well."
Recovering wired money or stolen personal information is often difficult because many of the scams are from out the country. The best way to keep your property safe? Hally said don't give out your credit card information over the phone unless you made the call and get your computer checked regularly for viruses.
