Woman presumed drowned on Oregon side of the Snake River

GENEVA BAR, OR - A multi-agency search is underway for a 66-year-old woman who went missing on Sunday.

According to Wallowa County Sheriff Steve Rogers, Nez Perce County divers along with the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon State Police are scouring the water for Sharon Matthews. Matthews was last seen at a beach on the Oregon side of the Snake River. Right now it's believed Matthews went into the water, despite not being able to swim.

"The stories are consistent that everybody believes she went in the water," said Sheriff Rogers. "Her shoes were found at the campsite at Geneva Bar. Walking away from there would be almost impossible, so at this point the officers are comfortable searching the water because that's where everybody believes she went."

Sheriff Rogers asks that anyone traveling up river focus on the surface of the water as well as the beaches, and to contact local law enforcement immediately if Matthews is spotted.
