WSU Student’s Tweet Goes Viral
PULLMAN, WA —
One Washington State University student wanted to capture the spirit of giving, and turned to twitter. Now, her pledge has gone viral. Danni Messina vowed in her tweet to donate for every retweet and favorite.
"I tweeted 25 cents for every favorite I got on this tweet, and then 50 cents per retweet, just because I wanted to give back this holiday season," says Messina.
When she sent out the tweet, she thought she would only get around 100 retweets and 50 favorites, if that. But when she checked the next day, the “twitterverse” had a surprise for her. Her tweet went viral. As of right now, Danni's tweet has been retweeted almost 200,000 times and favorited over 450,000 times.
"I don’t know any of these people. All these people are retweeting this and I have no idea who they are, but they want to support this awesome cause."
That cause was to donate what she raised to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Messina hopes to help put a smile on anyone's face during the holiday season.
"They have the most amazing research, and then they also have the most amazing medical program, and they don’t make families pay for anything," she says.
Because of the viral response, her pledge adds up to over $212,000. And like most college students, Danni doesn't have a lot of money to her name. Do she's started a go fund me to fundraise, with a goal of $50,000, a thousand of which she'll put up from her own pocket, because she believes helping people in the hospital is worth every penny.
"If you can make it better, and any more positive, that's what I want to do."
