Mayor of Tybee Island takes to the skies following major flooding from Irma
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTGS) - Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman got creative when surveying the damage left from Tropical Storm Irma.
Buelterman went out in a mosquito control helicopter and livestreamed it on Facebook to show the damage he saw.
The mayor says the devastation is worse for this storm than it was for Hurricane Matthew.
"So many people have sustained serious damage to their houses. So many people that went through this already, so many that didn't have to go through this last year and now are having a taste of it for themselves," he said.
The mayor says the bridges on Highway 80 are compromised.
He said he hopes the Georgia Department of Transportation can survey the damage Tuesday morning.
Until then, no one is allowed on the bridges to or from the island.
