As winter approaches and people begin to move inside, many of them will be moving inside the LCSC Activity Center, where the men's basketball team is just hours away from their first game. With that being said, here's a preview of the 2013 Lewis-Clark State College Men's Basketball Team.
After winning the Frontier Conference Championship last season, the LCSC men's basketball team is gearing up to go even further this season.
"I think the formula's the same...that just a year of experience, and having guys with a little more continuity that that's gonna' help up take that next step," said Head coach Brandon Rinta.
And in year three of coach Rinta's tenure as head coach, the team has truly bought in to what he is looking for.
"It's just really exciting, everyone's bought into our team concept which is the team is above everyone else," said guard/forward Jon Humphrie. "We don't have any individuals that are trying to stand out or anything. We just know that we're excited and I think we can do big things this year."
"In these preseason practices, it's right where we need to be as far as I can tell," said point guard Trey Sobotta. "Everyone's coming together as coach wants us to and we all love playing with each other and it's been a lot of fun."
Team chemistry certainly isn't a problem.
"It's really good," said Humphrie. "One thing about a team that has really good chemistry is your friends on the court and off the court which is something we've got going for us."
"All these guys are good friends of mine and I think they would say the same thing about me and it's been enjoyable this year," said Sobotta.
The team has a lot of noticeable strengths.
"Depth, like I said before, we can shoot it too," said Humphrie. "I think that's gonna' separate us from a lot of people. and we're athletic, our bigs can get up and down the floor, our guards can grab the ball, get the rebound and push it up the court. so I think people are going to notice that, that we're a pretty athletic group and we're gonna be able to strive and prosper from there."
"We've put ourselves in a position to have a great year, to have a successful year," said Rinta. "But you and I know both know that in sports, potential, that's not gonna' get it done and so I think what we've been talking about is our ability to come together as a team."
And with game one of the season just a day a way, coach and players alike are pumped!
"It's hard to contain right now," said Sobotta. "It's been a lot of hard work and dedication to this program and it's go time Friday, no holding us now."
"I have a calendar at home and I've been crossing out the days and I got two more x's to go till Friday comes," said Humphrie. "But I can't wait to get out on the court with these guys and see what we can do."
"We're excited," said Rinta. "We've been practicing for three or four weeks and we're ready to get out there and play somebody else."
So as they begin their quest for the coveted NAIA Championship, Trey Sobotta reminds us all that the journey will start one day at a time.
"Coach always says that championships are won today so our focus is today, this practice, and we'll move on from there," said Sobotta.
The Warrior men's season starts this Friday night at the LCSC Activity Center at 7 p.m. as they take on the University of Alberta - Augustana. After a short turnaround, they will play the same team the next morning at eleven. Best of luck to the Warriors this season on their quest for a championship!
