This man right here, Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday, with the guidance from Head Coach Mike Leach, would have a big day in Berkley as the Cougars visited the Cal Golden Bears.
First quarter, Halliday certainly didn't look like last week's injury affected him as he tosses a perfect lob to Vince Mayle for the 35-yard touchdown, nice soccer style celebration.
Same quarter, Jeremiah Laufasa bulldozes right up the middle, and that's a five-yard touchdown. Cougs up 14-0.
On the Cal side, Cal quarterback Jared Goff has a ton of time in the pocket, and he finds a wide open Chris Harper, and this guy's got some speed as he only needs to make one move to get around the Coug defender, and that's good for an 89-yard touchdown. Cougs up 14-13.
They would respond in a big way though just before halftime. Connor Halliday takes the snap and finds running back Marcus Mason on the swing pass, and Mason looks to be in trouble but cuts it back up to the left side of the field and has the speed to burn everyone on the Cal defense. That's a huge 68-yard touchdown, and it would be a battle, but at the end of this one,
The Cougars will get a big win doubling Cal's score, 44-22. On the day, Connor Halliday would complete 41 of 67 passes for 521 yard, three touchdowns and one pick. Coach Leach thought he did great!
"I thought he did really good, I thought he did a good job managing the unit," said Leach. "I thought he had a good week of practice. I thought, just as far as, cause there was a lot of drives and it was a pretty explosive game, and even though I thought it was kind of sloppy on both sides, I thought he did a really good job managing our offensive unit."
The 4-2 Cougs will face another tough division match-up this Saturday at home when they take on the Beavers of Oregon State with a scheduled 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
