Johnson's 14 points lift LCSC to NAIA first round win
BILLINGS, MT —
Last year the LCSC women were on the nation’s top teams and they proved just that by making a run all the way to the NAIA quarterfinals. But the Warriors returned just about everyone from that team a season ago and today the Warriors began their chase of a national championship in Billings.
Coach Orr and the number-one seeded Warriors taking on William Penn from Southeastern Iowa and in the second William Penn is gonna take the lead. Good patience as Vashti Nwagbaraocha pays it off down low, Warriors down three!
But LCSC wouldn’t stay down for long, Caelyn Orlandi, if you’re gonna give her that much space ya might as well sit your butt on the pine. And then Brian Orr drawing up a perfectly executed inbound play as Hailey Turner gets it back to Lauren Johnson, LC up by one at lunchtime.
Third quarter now and Lauren Johnson had one of her best games of the year, she wound up with 14. LC shot just 38-percent from the field for the game but they defeat the Statesmen 59-45.
"Honestly guys, this team was scary because they do, they shoot a lot of free throws and it can happen to anybody so we're just happy to win and move on,” said Brian Orr, LCSC Head Coach.
"We had to fix a couple things, first couple minutes we were kind of out of flow like you said but I think we just had to fix rebounding and knocking down shots and then we kind of got the momentum going our way a little bit,” said Caelyn Orlandi.
The Warriors return to the court tomorrow (Friday) for a 5:15 evening contest with Bethel University.
