Lewis-Clark State College senior Chelsey Leighton and sophomore Sam Atkin both won national championships over the weekend.
Leighton, who's from Lapwai, won the 26-point-two mile marathon with a time of three hours, two minutes, and 25 seconds, which was a little over six minutes faster than the closest competitor.
Atkin won the five-thousand meters with a time of 14-41-96. The native of England also won the national championship earlier this year in the indoor 3,000 meter run.
Head Coach Mike Collins is a proud coach while Leighton explains her immediate plans.
"Well it's amazing, it really shows just what hard work can do for you," said Collins. "We're trying to build some things here and we're getting a good reputation here for running and what we can produce and looking forward to hopefully bringing some more hardware home in the future."
"I'm gonna keep running, I think, not really sure to what extent though, that's still a conversation I have to have with my coach," said Leighton. "As far as where we go from here...for now, I guess, enjoy a little bit of time off."
Congrats to our newest national champions, L-C's Chelsea Leighton and Sam Atkin!
