As the University of Idaho band comes out to the field, the Vandals Football team knew they'd have a tough match-up as the No. 23 ranked Fresno State Bulldogs looked stay undefeated taking on the 1-4 Vandals.
As the team runs out to the field, they would have their hands full with this young man, Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr, all day.
First quarter, no score, Carr would hit another player who would have a monster day, and that's Davante Adams for the 27-yard touchdown. It's 7-0 Fresno.
Next Vandals possession, quarterback Chad Chalich is going to scramble out to his right and try to force a pass, and it ends up in the hands of Fresno's Derron Smith for the interception. Bulldog's take over...
And they would capitalize again...this is one of the greatest catches you'll ever see, Carr launches once again to Adams who makes a sick one-handed grab...beautiful catch on the 17-yard score. Bulldogs up 14-0.
Next Vandal possession, Chalich drops back and throws just behind his receiver, it's tipped up and falls in the hands of Cha Washington..Bulldogs get the ball again.
Bulldogs keep rolling, Carr quick pass to Josh Harper, and that's a nine-yard touchdown. 21-0 dogs.
We soon find out the Bulldogs can run it too...Marteze Waller takes the hand-off and flies to the right side...that's a nine-yard touchdown. dogs up 28-0.
Carr doing more damage near the beginning of the second quarter, he hits Isaiah Burse for the two-yard touchdown strike, 35-0 Fresno State.
Second quarter and a bright spot for the Vandals hoping to build momentum, they find Derek Carr is not perfect as Jayshawn Jordan picks him off... nice jump there.
But that momentum would be stopped as Chalich tries to scramble and is sacked in his own end-zone for the safety.
And to cap this first half, Carr would once again hit his favorite target, Davante Adams for the two-yard touchdown....Fresno State takes a whopping 44-0 lead.
And I'll stop with the details now as the Bulldogs win huge over the Vandals, 61-14...Coach Petrino tells it how it is.
"You know, we got our butts kicked," said Petrino. "That's the biggest general thought. You know we moved the ball earlier in the game and then had turnovers, and you can't do that. We can't do that, especially against that good of a team. And defensively we couldn't do anything against them in the first half, they kinda just picked us apart at will."
There was some controversy during the game as it was reported that Coach Petrino or a coach on the Vandal sideline had instructed his defensive players to hit the Bulldogs quarterback late. Fresno State Coach Tim Deruyter had some words for Petrino, though the Vandal coach was adamant that he never said anything of the sort.
The Vandals will be on the road to take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves this Saturday.
