The 4-3 Washington State University Cougars had a date with the 6-0 University of Oregon in Eugene, and the Ducks were dawning pink helmets in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
As for the game, well, it started out like this, Duck's quarterback Marcus Mariotta shows why he's a strong Heisman candidate as he runs the read-option perfectly here, keeps the ball and is off to the races...57 yards later, that's six points for the Ducks.
After another Ducks rushing score, Cougs have the ball in the red zone and check out the touch on this pass from Connor Halliday to Dom Williams...and that's complete for an 11-yard Cougar touchdown...Ducks up 13-7.
Nearing the end of the first quarter, it's another read-option for the Ducks, but this time Mariotta gives to running back Byron Marshall, and no one is gonna catch up to this kid as he dashes into the end-zone for the 26-yard score, ducks up 20-7.
Second quarter now, we see some Cougar defense as defensive leader Daryl Monroe gets to Mariotta with the strip sack, and whose gonna pick up the ball, big man Xaview Cooper whose going to move as fast as his big legs can take him...and he gets into the end-zone for the touchdown. But It will stop there as the rest of the highlights would seem to favor the Ducks as they win it 62-38. Cougars Coach Mike Leach talks about how good Oregon really is.
"If they're not the best team, they're easily in the top five," said Leach. "I think everyone has them, the way they rank up there and that's clearly where they belong."
On a good note, Cougs quarterback Connor Halliday passed for a ridiculous 557 yards and four touchdowns, but also threw four interceptions. Out of the eleven receivers Halliday went to in this one, Gabe Marks benefited them most with 13 grabs for 143 yards and a touchdown.
The 4-4 Cougars will have a bye this coming week and will next play the Arizona State Sun Devils for the big Halloween game.
