UI overcomes 17-point deficit but still can't top
MOSCOW, ID —
The last time that the Idaho Vandals were in the Big Sky Championship game was way back in 1993 when they lost to Boise State, and also lost a shot at a spot in the NCAA Tournament. But after last night’s win, the Vandals had a golden opportunity sitting right in front of them in the conference semifinals.
The Vandals came out flatter than a pancake in Reno and fell behind by as many as 17. But mid-way through the first half the Vandals started to chop away and eventually took the lead thanks to a 15-0 run with about 10 minutes to go in half number two. But North Dakota responded with a 17-1 run of their own to put them over the top.
Vic Sanders led Idaho 20 but it was the Vandals inability to finish in close that cost them. Idaho missed countless point blank looks inside, six of which came from Arkadity Mkrtychyan who shot just 2 of 8 after posting back to back games of 21 and 19. Idaho’s season likely isn’t over, but their chase as a spot in the big dance has come to an end after their 69-64 loss to the fighting Hawks.
