And no better day to get a win than on Senior Day as the Washington State Cougar Football team's 16 seniors were honored before they took on a 4-6 Utah Utes team, and this game turned out to be a good one.
Second quarter, 24-14 Cougs, Connor Halliday, not known for his running, improvises very well using his legs until he finally throws across the grain to hit Marcus Mason for the 9-yard touchdown...the extra point is blocked, but it's still 30-14.
Now let's give the kicker a little love, fan-favorite Andrew Furney with the 52-yard field goal attempt before the half is good! That helps the Cougs to a 33-20 lead. the players, fans, everyone loves Furney!
Let's jump to the end of this close one, Halliday with the perfect pass in stride to Dom Williams who cannot be caught, he flies for 71 yards, a big touchdown and the Cougs win it 49-37. With the win, the Cougs jump back over 500, sitting at 6-5, and are bowl eligible for the first time since 2006! Coach Leach discusses how it feels to potentially get to a bowl in only his second season with the team.
"Feels good, I mean no special feeling other than proud of our guys in how they played," said Leach. "And it' all a byproduct of making the most of your individual plays and people doing their job together and so I think as we get better as a team and mature at doing our job from one play to the next."
The 6-5 Cougs will play arguably their most important game of the season this Friday in Seattle as they take on the Washington Huskies in the annual Apple Cup game. A win here could solidify their bowl hopes...good luck, Cougs!
