Idaho's Iupati in Super Bowl after slow start in Moscow

NEW ORLEANS (KBOI) - Say what you will about Vandal football, but there's no Boise State player in Super Bowl XLVII. While Idaho fans know Mike Iupati will rep the silver and gold on Sunday.

The former Vandal lineman has been stellar since San Francisco made him a first round draft pick in 2010. His early college career was a bit more rocky. Iupati was a non-qualifier, and unable to play any pigskin during his freshman year at the University of Idaho.

"Going to Idaho, I hated my first year. Because, I didn't participate in football. I was just going to school and coming back. It was like a repetitive cycle, and I wanted to leave," said Iupati.

That all changed once Iupati got back on the field during his redshirt-freshman season, and he has dominated ever since. On Super Bowl Sunday he'll become the 11th Vandal to play in the big game.

Jerry Kramer was the first, playing in the Super Bowl I and II. Mark Schlereth made three trips, the most of any Vandal.

Iupati and the rest of the San Francisco 49ers meet the Baltimore Ravens right here on KBOI 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 pm (MTN) Sunday, but pregame coverage starts at 9:30 am (MTN).
