Mariners to retire Edgar Martinez's no.11
SEATTLE, WA —
The Seattle Mariners will retire just the second number in the famed teams history after announcing Edgar Martinez's no.11 will never be worn by another Mariner player in the history of their team. A ceremony will be held for Martinez on August 12th at Safeco Field prior to that night's 6:10 p.m. PT game against the Angels.
"This is an incredible honor for me and my family," Martinez said at a Safeco Field news conference where his framed jersey was unveiled. "It's a gift we'll cherish forever."
It's a great honor for Martinez who has fallen short in his Hall of Fame bid over the last few years. The slugger batted .312 over his career with 309 career home runs and 1,219 career RBI. He added a .418 on-base percentage and .515 slugging percentage to his other batting numbers and twice led the American League in batting average and doubles.
