Chandler Teigen sets new course record in cross country race.

ASOTIN, WA - You ever notice how most athletes are well known for playing the major American sports like football, basketball, or baseball?

We meet a young man who doesn't play any of those sports, and doesn't need to to be recognized all around the school and the valley for his accomplishments on and off the track. Let's meet this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week," Asotin High cross country runner, Chandler Teigen.

Being a runner is one of the hardest sports there is. You've not only got to be in phenomenal shape, but also be ever stronger mentally. Asotin High's Chandler Teigen is both of those.

"I won the Chief Timothy race and set a new course record, so that was good," said Teigen.

Ok now tell us about the the ridiculous personal record you recently broke.

"At the last LCSC hosted meet behind Ziggy's, I p-r'd for my time in state in 5,000 meters by almost 40 seconds," said Teigen.

40 seconds is huge! Though it gets easier when you get along with everyone on your team!

"I like how close-knit the team is and how you can really work together and also you compete separately too," said Teigen. "So trying to compete separately, you are competing as a team, I like that."

And how about in the classroom?

"I get good grades, so far I have a 4.0 GPA in high school so I get good grades," said Teigen.

Many recent "Prep Athlete of the Week" winners have an affinity for math or science. What does Chandler like?

"Something math or science based just because those are my two favorite subjects that I think I'm the best at," said Teigen.

He potentially wants to be some form of engineer, and I asked, like every week, Vandal or Coug?

"Probably Washington State," said Teigen. "It's close but not too close, and it's a pretty good brother went there, or is going there. And I don't know I've just always wanted to go there."

And though he only runs cross country and track, that doesn't mean he doesn't have friends through other sports.

"Some of my best friends are basketball and football players and one of them does golf, so I intermingle," said Teigen.

Based on his incredible athletic gifts, Asotin coaches from other sports must be trying to get him on their teams. Any chance?

"No, I definitely wouldn't play football because it's during cross country season and I wouldn't want to give that up," said Teigen. "And basketball is during winter and I don't do anything during the winter and a lot of people want me to just because I'm pretty tall, but I wouldn't want to give up the months of training for track to play basketball."

Sorry coaches...Chandler is the school's ASB Vice President, in the National Honor Society, and heavily involved with the FFA. Combine those with his great grades and athletic feats, and that's how we have this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week," Asotin High junior, Chandler Teigen.

"It means a lot to me," said Teigen. "It's nice to be recognized for what student athletes do because it can be hard sometimes as well as enjoyable so it's nice to be recognized for that."

We hope you enjoyed meeting Chandler Teigen. Each week throughout this school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you'd like to nominate... just go to, click on sports and then prep athlete. Every Wednesday those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
