Christine Sayler serves up strategy and humbleness when playing LHS tennis

LEWISTON, ID - It takes many of us a long time to realize how important learning from our past is. A local tennis player knows how important history is in our lives, not only for everyday life, but also as a way to better her game and she's only a junior in high school.

Let's meet this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week" Lewiston High's Christine Sayler!

Lewiston High's Christine Sayler plays tennis...and that's it.

"I focus on a sport all year-round, and it gives me more time and dedication to it, rather than jumbling a bunch of sports around being mediocre," said Sayler.

There's a lot more strategy than people think!

"It's kind of like a chess game, you never know, and it's strategic," said Sayler. "It's not just trying to run it in the end zone; you have all these things that go into every single point."

She got into tennis like many of us got into our respective sports.

"My father played and just like all of us joked around as kids and then my dad just had me pick up a racquet," said Sayler.

And she's doing well in the classroom.

"Just A's and B's, just standard," said Sayler.

Her favorite class is history, for an impressive reason.

"Humans tend to make a lot of mistakes and history tends to show the lessons that we should be learning from," said Sayler. "And I think it's important that we don't make those mistakes again"

In addition to spending time with her family, she has another activity she loves.

"I volunteer at the hospital at the day care center....and I just love being around little children," said Sayler.

Christine has an interesting nickname that her grandfather gave her.

"Well, people call me cricket," said Sayler.

One of cricket's heroes is a local figure who is a hero to many people in the valley.

"Kai Fong...because he's a tennis player but not only that, he's just an awesome person and he never looks at your opponent, you look at yourself," said Sayler.

Congratulations to this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week," Lewiston High Junior Christine Sayler!

"I think it's a blessing and an honor because, I don't know, you look at yourself and you're just like a regular high school student just like everybody else and to be acknowledged is huge," said Sayler.

We hope you enjoyed meeting Christine Sayler. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you'd like to nominate, just go to, click on sports and then prep athlete. Every Wednesday those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
