Double-double machine, Gfeller, named P1FCU Prep Athlete
COLFAX, WA —
Every single week we get to meet a tremendous prep athlete through our P1FCU “Prep Athlete of the Week” award, but this week not only do we get to meet an incredible athlete but we get to meet a girl who might have more upside than anyone in the entire area…..it’s Colfax High’s Carmen Gfeller.
Carmen Gfeller is a three-sport stud at Colfax High School. She excels in volleyball and track but there’s one sport that is in her blood.
"I've just grown up with basketball my whole life ever since I was like three years old I was dribbling,” said Gfeller. “I was out in the shop playing basketball with my brothers."
Carmen has learned the true definition of hard work and dedication through her help on the family farm. She drives truck and does other daily tasks and it’s helped her when she steps out onto the court.
"I always want to be the hardest worker on the court,” said Gfeller.
But it’s not always about hard work, it’s about basketball IQ and where most kids live on the three-point line, Carmen knows she has to take advantage of her six-foot-one frame.
"If there's a guard on me then go post them up and if there's a post on me take them to the hoop,” said Gfeller. “So basically I just take what the defense gives me."
To fully develop her game, Carmen’s next goal is to stretch the floor and be a little bit more like her brother who stars on the University of Montana’s Basketball team.
"Me and Brandon are really close, I look up to him so much just as a role model and just as a person in general,” said Gfeller. “He and I would always go to the gym together growing up and he has taught me so much about hard work. He's like never be the last one and always be first and if you can't be first then find a way to work harder than somebody."
Carmen who already has offers from Eastern Washington and the Portland Pilots has coaches across the BigSky and West Coast Conference buzzing over her talents and she’d love to follow in her brother’s footsteps.
"Just listening to him tell all the stories about college basketball and how he bonds with his teammates and stuff and just taking that love for the game to the next level is really something I'm interested in,” said Gfeller.
We hope you enjoyed meeting Carmen this evening. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you’d like to nominate just go to klewtv.com, click on sports and then prep athlete.
