When Asotin High's Dirk Whitmore moved to the area in seventh grade, he didn't expect to be a track athlete.
"My parents said well there's a track program here and I was like oh really?" said Whitmore. "And they said yeah we did track in junior high and high school. And I was like, well I might as well try it. I did and I ended up sticking with it."
And he is beating everyone in the javelin, discus, and shot putt events. Now as for the classroom....
"I'm getting A's and B's, so that's good," said Whitmore.
As for his favorite subject.
"Well, my favorite class is band," said Whitmore. "I don't know if that's considered a subject or not."
And on that note, he's a very accomplished musician.
"Well, I've played the guitar, but it's been a couple years since I've picked one up though," said Whitmore. "And I play the drum-set and the saxophone."
If he had to pick one he's best at, it would be the drums.
"I don't like to brag but I get a lot of compliments and when we go to jazz festivals and colleges and stuff," said Whitmore. "At least one professor comes up to me and says 'oh nice job!"
And where will this drummer be attending college?
"I've already registered for classes at LCSC for diesel technology, so that will be my major," said Whitmore.
If he doesn't end up in a famous band, he wants to be a mechanic. In his rare free time...
"Well I like to play music, I always get caught in the band room after school or before school and whatnot," said Whitmore. "I like to hang out with my friends, come throw, play basketball, throw a football, mostly stuff outside."
Back to music, he has an interesting band choice that relaxes him.
"I usually put Def Leopard on shuffle," said Whitmore. "They're my favorite band, so it kinda clears my mind."
Def Leopard would be just as proud as we are to name Asotin High Senior Dirk Whitmore this week's P1FCU "Prep Athlete of the Week."
"It means a lot, you know?" said Whitmore. "It's not like I applied or had to put forth my effort to get this. "It's just I got nominated by someone who thinks I'm a good role model and do well so, it does mean a lot."
We hope you enjoyed meeting Dirk Whitmore this evening. Each week throughout the school year KLEW Sports and P1FCU team up to highlight a deserving athlete in the area. If you have someone you'd like to nominate, just go to k-l-e-w-t-v-dot-com, click on sports, and then prep athlete. Every Wednesday those athletes are showcased right here on KLEW-TV for their outstanding accomplishments.
